Chapter

Thirteen

Stella

I turn, hands bunched.

I don’t care that the zinging pleasure of the night before still flies through me in little bursts. Airic and Wels want to protest. Especially Airic.

Thing is no one can tell me what will happen definitively with this forbidden magic projection. None of them knows. All they do is tell me how powerful I am, how wild and new and different my magic is, and I feel that. Do I know how to use it? No.

But I’m sick of being just boring, do-just-enough Stella. If something bad happens, then let it be because I saved a great knight. Let it be because I saved a kingdom. The one that’s been part of me since I stumbled there somehow as a kid.

It’s not even that I think I’m some kind of modern savior, but if I can do something, I will. No matter what.

And I know I can’t do it alone.

There’s a symbiotic nature to the magic, and it’s tied into the sex, the closeness, emotions I hold for Reis and Airic and Wels. Reis isn’t here, but they are.

With the guiding hand and great knowledge of Ysaig then we can do this. I know we can. I hope we can.

“Please,” I whisper, “Reis needs us. And I can’t do this alone. You both know this.”

I swallow as Ysaig steps up. “You all have something to bring to this. I’ll help guide.”

“The risks,” says Airic. “I can’t.”

“Yes, you can,” Ysaig eyes him. It’s calculated, as there’s a glimmer in his gaze. “Unless you’re a coward.”

Airic’s eyes narrow.

Ysaig turns to me as a sleek striped cat winds itself around Wels, who doesn’t say anything, but strokes the cat, shifting his hand to scratch its ear and side of its chin, bringing its purr loud, almost like the cat has instructed him to the best place for it. Almost like they talk. Maybe they do. It would be so Wels.

“They are cowards,” the old man says. “Both.”

“Leave me out of this. I’m not a fan of her risking her life, or whatever, but…what the lady wants to do is fine with me,” Wels straightens and the cat meows.

Airic folds his arms. “He’s playing us, trying to get us through ego.”

“True enough.” Ysaig starts to gather a few things. A bag of gold dust he showed me last night. A knife. A bejeweled staff I haven’t seen before. It’s old, smooth in places and fits his hand so perfectly. “And maybe I shouldn’t, but I’ll do what I can. I can get it open and Stella needs you both to hold it steady. Your magic all works together, like pieces of a puzzle clicking, but time is running out, so we can do it without you.”

“I’m game,” I say.

Inside I’m terrified but I can use that.

“Stella…” Airic shakes his head.

And Wels sighs. “The cat says to do it.”

“You’re going to listen to a cat?” Airic turns to him.

“Why not?” He shrugs. “If we were back home, you wouldn’t say that. And they’re right, we’re running out of time.
